About Us

ZIEGELBLOK™ is a family‑owned business built on a simple belief: the best play experiences don’t need screens, batteries, or apps—just imagination, strategy, and time together. Our goal is to create thoughtfully designed games and building components that bring families to the table while encouraging problem‑solving, creativity, and STEM‑based thinking.

A little History....

The idea behind ZIEGELBLOK™ started in 1999 in an unlikely place—a copy center. While a mother wrapped up design work, a father watched his four‑year‑old son build towers of colorful blocks at a kid‑sized play table. As those towers rose and fell, an idea formed: what if building blocks could also be a strategic board game?

Back home, the first prototype was born—hand‑cut plexiglass for the game board and foam building caps. The basic rules created then remain largely intact today. Originally called Uptown, the game became a family favorite, surviving an early rejection from an invention development company and spending years quietly enjoyed around the family table.

For a long time, that’s where the story rested.

Bringing ZIEGELBLOK™ to Life

Fast forward to 2024. That same four‑year‑old—now 27—received a 3D printer for Christmas. While experimenting with what to create, the old game came back into conversation. What started as a fun project quickly became a shared mission. As the son mastered 3D printing, the father dove into CAD design. Together, they redesigned every component—refining the board, creating new building caps, and enhancing gameplay. Hundreds of hours later, ZIEGELBLOK™ had evolved into something both nostalgic and entirely new.

When it came time to name the game, they wanted something distinctive. With nearly every variation of “brick” already taken, inspiration struck during a late‑night drive on the interstate. Drawing from their shared German heritage, Ziegel—the German word for “brick”—was paired with blok, representing the city blocks players build throughout the game. ZIEGELBLOK™ was born.

Built by a Family, For a Family

The final pieces came together as a true family effort. The logo was designed by the parents, the box design shaped by the “marketing department” (wife and daughter), and the business itself built through the shared challenges of patents, manufacturing, websites, and fulfillment.

Today, ZIEGELBLOK™ continues to grow with new architectural components, real life–inspired landmarks, and community events. We’re proud of what we’ve built—and even more excited to share it with families who value creativity, competition, and connection as much as we do.
