The Nebraska State Capital is the seat of government of the U.S. state of Nebraska and is located in Lincoln. Designed by New York architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue in 1920, it was constructed of Indiana limestone. The capital houses the primary executive and judicial offices and is home to its Legislature—the only unicameral state legislature in the United States.
The capital held the title of tallest building in Nebraska until 1969. The tower can be seen up to 20 miles away. It was the first state capital to incorporate a functional tower into its design. In 1976, the National Park Service designated the capital a National Historic Landmark. The structure is anchored by a 3-story, 437-foot square base. From the center of the base, a tower rises 362 feet, crowned by a gold-tiled dome. The finial—The Sower and its pedestal—add an additional 32 feet to the building's height. The capital is the second-tallest statehouse in the US.
Lincoln Municipal Code places height restrictions on structures within the designated Capital Environs District. This code helps to maintain the capital's title as the tallest building in Lincoln.
